Utilizing Student Employees to Support the Classroom Technology Service

UC Berkeley has over 210 classrooms with installed Audio Visual (AV) equipment supported by the Classroom Technology Service (CTS) team. Students operate large (600+ seats) lecture halls that require camera, lighting, and sound operation, as well as provide over-the-phone troubleshooting and in-person classroom technology assistance. Students are interviewed for CTS positions and attend trainings, shadow staff on initial shifts, and are required to maintain knowledge of the work and professionalism throughout their employment. With a team of 3.5 CTS FTEs to support the many classroom spaces, we have created a robust student staffing model that allows students to gain valuable job and personal skills while providing an excellent level of service to a large majority of the campus population.
